In 2017, 4,257,177, people visited Yellowstone National Park. That is a lot of people! Especially when you consider the park is only accessible for half of the year. (due to large amounts of snow most people don’t visit during the colder months)
There is so much to see in Yellowstone, and it is no wonder that over four million people show up to see the wonders hidden inside. Amazing sights to behold including black and grizzly bears, bison, elk, mountains, lakes, pools, geysers, wolves, and so much more.
Before my first visit to Yellowstone, I thought that it had “a” geyser (singular). My family and I decided to go and visit Yellowstone for one reason, Old Faithful.
Once we arrived at the park, we were quickly educated on all the amazing things that Yellowstone had to offer, including over 500 geysers (more than just one). Half of the world’s geysers in one place.
We saw a momma bear and her two cubs climbing up a tree, bison herds running across the plains, and yellow belly marmots scurrying around rocks.
On top of the geysers and amazing animals, there are also thousands of other thermal features in the park. There are steaming pools, steaming holes in the ground, and mud pits, spread out across a great range that gives you an endless supply of steaming things to explore.
We spent over two months in the park and saw geyser after geyser erupt including rare geysers that we had to sit and wait 12-15 hours to see. For all the amazing things we saw, it was hard to remember why we had initially come to Yellowstone in the first place.
It wasn’t the bears, the marmots, the rare geysers, or even the bison. It was Old Faithful that drew us in. We weren’t aware of all of these other great things before our arrival, we only knew of Old Faithful. No imagining could conjure up such a wonderous place of possibility.
Often in our own Christian walk, we forget why we came to be a Christ-follower. We get lost in the business of doing and forget the reason why we came to Christ in the first place. We start focusing on the tasks of life in the church, by volunteering and lose sight of the whole reason we are there in the first place.
Jesus and His sacrifice are why we are believers, He is why we gather together in churches and talk together as friends, He is the reason we are all here.
Jesus knew we’d struggle to remember WHY we were all together.
In Luke 22 Jesus holds the first communion and his instructions were clear,
“19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
Why would he say that? Because he knew we’d forget, forget why we are at church, forget why we live the way they live, forget what first drew us into his communion and relationship in the first place.
He is the common denominator in each of our faiths. With all of our differences, believers can find common ground in the thing that brought them all to the same place.
Don’t get lost in today, in thinking of what has happened, or in thinking about what will need to be done tomorrow. Take time to remember Jesus. He is why we are all here.
We do easily forget.
I love how you SEE GOD everywhere. This is an awesome mindset to have, I truly enjoy reading your articles.
